I Could Use Some Feedback Drawing Activity

I Could Use Some Feedback Activity

Sometimes it is hard for children, and even adults, to receive feedback. This game helps highlight the benefit of good feedback.

Materials

Pens
Pencils
Markers
Paper

Procedure

Leading the Activity

  1. Have teams pair up, with one person as the coach and the other as the illustrator.
  2. Instruct the coach that they will be describing an image to the illustrator for the illustrator to draw. It can be very simple such as a square or a star or even more complex such as a dog.
  3. Have the coach give the illustrator step-by-step instructions to draw the shape without telling the illustrator what they are actually drawing. Tell the illustrator to not let the coach see the drawing. The illustrator will be drawing the picture based on the coaches instruction, but the coach will not be able to see what they are drawing.
  4. Allow 2 to 3 minutes for the coach to instruct the illustrator and the illustrator to draw
  5. Then have the coach look at the drawing and provide feedback about how accurately the drawing depicts the image(without disclosing what the desired image should be).
  6. Continue having the coach instruct the illustrator based on the feedback the illustrator received from the coach. Do this for 2 to 3 more minutes.
  7. Have the pairs look at the final picture together and compare them with what it was supposed to be.
  8. Have them switch roles and repeat the activity using a different image

Discussion Questions

Ask the group the following:

  1. For the coaches, did you feel your feedback was helpful?

2. For the illustrators, what did you feel when you were receiving feedback?

3. How can giving and receiving feedback help you be more successful?

Pro tips

Make sure to monitor how the coaches are providing feedback and how the illustrators are accepting it. You can use this as part of your discussion as well.

Alter the amount of time and number of feedback sessions based on the skill level needed to draw the object.
